Prof. Dr. Judith Aberle from the Center for Virology at the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, will hold a guest lecture at the IVI on the topic of

“Tick-borne encephalitis virus – a significant cause of neuroinvasive disease in Europe”

The lecture will take place on Thursday, 23rd of October 2025 in the Pharmacology lecture hall, Peter-Mayr-Straße 1, 6020 Innsbruck.

Short Bio

Judith Aberle is Professor of Viral Immunology at the Medical University of Vienna. She studied human medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Vienna and was a visiting student at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. In 2005, she earned her habilitation in virology and has been a board-certified specialist in virology since 2006. In 2022/2023, she conducted research at Tulane University in the USA as part of a scientific project.

She heads the Austrian National Reference Centre for HIV as well as the medical arbovirus diagnostics unit, and serves as an expert for the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection, as well as on several international committees. Since 2022, she has been Deputy Head of the Center for Virology.

At the Center for Virology, she leads a research group investigating immune responses to flavivirus infections and vaccinations, with a focus on immunological and genetic factors influencing disease progression. Another key area of her work—closely linked to other research fields at the Center—concerns medical virus diagnostics and the epidemiology of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and West Nile virus in Austria.
