Dr. Mathias Schemmerer from the Institute of Clinical Microbiology and Hygiene at the University Medical Center Regensburg will give a guest lecture at IVI on the topic “HAV and HEV from the Perspective of a National Reference Laboratory.

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, January 29, 2026 at 3:00 pm in the Pharmacology Lecture Hall, Peter-Mayr-Straße 1, 6020 Innsbruck.

Short Bio

Mathias Schemmerer is a Medical Virologist at the Institute of Clinical Microbiology and Hygiene at the University Medical Center Regensburg and has been Deputy Head of the National Consultant Laboratory for Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) and Hepatitis E Virus (HEV) since 2023.

He studied at the University of Regensburg and transferred to the University Medical Center Regensburg in 2017, where he has since been working in the Wenzel research group. Since 2014, he has been working at the National Consultant Laboratory, focusing on the investigation of hepatitis A and hepatitis E outbreaks as well as conducting HEV seroprevalence studies.

His research focuses include the establishment and optimization of cell culture systems for HAV, HEV, and ratHEV, as well as the development of NGS workflows for various hepatitis viruses and Borna Disease Virus. He also investigates the relevance of ratHEV in Germany and analyzes the dynamics of anti-HEV IgG antibodies. In addition to his research activities, he collaborates in diagnostics and quality management, where he is involved in establishing in-house tests and applying RiliBÄK standards, and regularly supervises bachelor and doctoral theses.
