Tigermücken-Virus im Fokus der Med-Uni

Summary:

An ORF Tirol report on the launch of the EU-funded EAVI (European–African Vaccine Initiative) project, led by Prof. Gisa Gerold, Head of the Institute of Virology at the Medical University of Innsbruck. The five-year, €14 million project will test the Chikungunya vaccine — already licensed in Europe — for safety and efficacy in Africa, where it is not yet approved, together with a consortium spanning Kenya, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain and vaccine manufacturer Valneva.

The article also notes the growing risk of local outbreaks in Europe, including Tyrol, as warmer temperatures allow the Asian tiger mosquito — a vector for Chikungunya virus — to spread further north.
