Minisymposium “New trends and challenges in Virology”

On 28 April 2026, Prof. Gisa Gerold (Institute of Virology, MUI) and Prof. Guenter Weiss (University Clinic for Internal Medicine II) organised the minisymposium “New trends and challenges in Virology” at the Großer Hörsaal MZA, Anichstraße 35.

Prof. Dr. Monika Redlberger from the Department of Medical Virology at the Medical University of Vienna presented on “Emerging respiratory viruses”, covering current and emerging respiratory pathogens and their public health relevance.

Prof. Dr. Marco Hein from the Vienna Biocenter Campus / Max Perutz Labs gave a talk entitled “Systems level view of emerging virus infections”, exploring systems biology approaches to understanding emerging viral infections.

The symposium concluded with a presentation by Prof. Gerold on “To fear or not to fear: virological research to prepare for pandemics”, followed by an open discussion.
